Fairland Esports Teams Battle Toward Playoffs With 5–2 Records
FAIRLAND, OK — Fairland High School’s esports teams continue to make waves in the state standings, with all three Super Smash Bros. squads now sitting at 5–2 as the regular season heads toward the playoff stretch in November.
The Fairland Owl Goonies led by seniors Curtis Rouell, Caleb Green, David Schuster, and Taylor Fry, faced a tough test this week against one of Oklahoma’s top programs, the Edmond Santa Fe Cyber Wolves, a 6A powerhouse currently ranked 13th in the state. Despite a strong effort, the Goonies fell 2–7, marking just their second loss of the season. The defeat drops Fairland to 5–2 overall but keeps them firmly in playoff contention. The Goonies will look to bounce back next week when they take on the Sulphur Bulldogs on Wednesday, November 5.
Meanwhile, the Fairland Owl Violators anchored by juniors Spencer Oswald, Trae Kleinknight, Jerry Lodwick, and Carson King, kept their winning momentum going with a 6–3 victory over the North Rock Creek Cougars. The team showed depth and consistency across their lineup, improving their record to 5–2 and remaining one of the program’s most balanced squads. The Violators are set to face the Bethany Broncos next Wednesday in what could be a key matchup for playoff seeding.
The Fairland Owl Scarlet team including sophomores Connor Green, Luke Wilkes, and Dontaye Vang also impressed, sweeping the Muldrow Bulldogs 6–0 in dominant fashion. The Scarlet squad’s strong showing not only evened their record at 5–2 but also highlighted their growth and potential heading into the final weeks of the season. They’ll meet the Sapulpa Chieftains next Wednesday, November 5, as they aim to extend their winning streak.
With all three Fairland teams sharing identical 5–2 records, competition within the program is heating up as each squad fights for playoff positioning. Coach Jonathan Stelle said he’s proud of how the players have handled the challenges of the season and remains focused on getting better each week.
“Every team in our program has stepped up,” said Coach Stelle. “The real test comes as the season goes on, our goal is to continually improve. We have to earn it every time we play, stay disciplined, and execute regardless of what the score is. If we keep that mindset, the results will take care of themselves.”
As the postseason approaches, Fairland’s blend of senior leadership, junior talent, and sophomore development has the Owls poised for a strong finish to the season.

Happy Birthday to Mrs. Wade!

Playing this role taught me a lot about emotional connection and understanding the depth behind a character’s experiences. I learned how important it is to connect personally with the emotions my character feels whether it’s pain, love, fear, or hope. This helped me move beyond just “acting” and start feeling what the character was going through. The theme of the story about facing inner struggles and finding strength helped me see how powerful vulnerability can be on stage. The setting also influenced my performance, as I had to imagine myself fully in that world and react naturally to it. Through this process, I practiced a bit of method acting, using my own memories and emotions to make the performance more real. It taught me that the best performances come when you let yourself be open and truly step into your character’s life.

To get into character for Roderick Usher, I started by imagining myself in a truly terrifying situation. A situation that would make me tremble with fear. Then I practiced how to project that same feeling on stage, as if I were actually living through it again. It helped me bring Roderick’s nervous energy and haunting presence to life in The Fall of the House of Usher.

“This is my first time performing on stage, and it’s been a huge learning experience! As Fortunato in The Cask of Amontillado, I’ve had to figure out pacing, movement, and how to bring a character to life in such a short act. It’s definitely taught me what it really means to act!” Come see Canton and the rest of the Fairland Drama Club in A Night with Poe — a chilling evening of classic tales brought to the stage! 🔥🕯️ #FairlandDrama #ANightWithPoe #CharacterSpotlight #StudentTalent
