Fairland Esports Off to Strong Start in Super Smash Bros. Spring Season
FAIRLAND, OK — The early spring season of Super Smash Bros. competition has brought fast starts and strong performances for Fairland High School’s esports program, with two teams remaining undefeated and all three squads positioned near the top of the standings.
The Fairland Owls Scarlet team — Connor Green, Luke Wilkes, Carson King, and Dontaye Vang — has surged to a 3–0 start, highlighted by an impressive 6–2 victory over 5A Corsicana High School. Their dominant early-season play has earned them recognition beyond the local level, as they are currently ranked Top 10 in Oklahoma and 25th in the South Central Region. Scarlet’s balanced lineup and consistent execution have made them one of the early teams to watch this spring.
The Fairland Owls Goonies, made up of Curtis Rouell, Caleb Green, and Taylor Fry, are also off to a perfect 3–0 start. One of the season’s defining moments came in a matchup against 3A Seminole High School. After falling behind 0–2, the Goonies rallied with poise and determination to claim a 6–3 comeback victory, showcasing the resilience and composure that have become trademarks of the team.
The Fairland Owls Violators — Spencer Oswald, Trae Kleinknight, and Jerry Lodwick — currently hold a strong 2–1 record. Their season includes a hard-fought battle against 6A Sapulpa High School, where Fairland secured a gritty 6–4 win against larger school competition.
While the results have been impressive, Coach Jonathan Stelle continues to emphasize growth over rankings.
“I want our players to enjoy winning, but I don’t want them to be satisfied with it,” Coach Stelle said. “We’ve done some very good things so far and I’m proud of them. However, we still have a lot of things to clean up. We need to stay focused on the process of getting better instead of the rankings. We need to take the confidence from these early season wins and use them to fuel our preparation, not to think we can just relax. The standard doesn’t change just because we’re winning, if anything, the standard gets higher.”
With momentum building and rankings rising, Fairland’s esports teams remain focused on preparation and steady improvement as the spring Super Smash Bros. season continues.
